City of Fairfield Volunteer Appreciation Poem & Picture from the Luncheon

Service of Giving
            ___ Juanita J. Martin©2011

My conscience tugs the spirit,
to surrender my heart,
for love of community.

It is not glory or money that I seek;
service to others is my destiny.
My soul has the wealth of kings.

Words cannot describe my desire.
No temporal gain can satisfy,
nor replace inner peace.

It’s the sun piercing a cerulean sky,
music of an internal song,
the wings of compassion that carry me.

The Poet in Me
 __ Juanita J. Martin

Words escape , poetry is alive
Speaking volumes

Challenging your psyche
Touching secret places

Revealing layers
Lifting you out of yourself

Your soul stripped naked
Back to that pre-pubescent stage

When color was a crayon
and the world was at play

What is a Poet Laureate?

In case you didn't know, a poet laureate is a poet with a substantial background in poetry. They are appointed by a government to write poetry for occasions. They also may visit schools, help implement programs and give readings of their work, in order to bring poetry to their communities. They are essentially ambassadors for the literary art form known as poetry.

As Fairfield 's first poet laureate, I will do all these things and more. I will also write an original poem for the city of Fairfield and document my historical reign. Feel free to leave a brief comment here on my blog or send an email to juanitamartinpoet@yahoo.com

If you have ideas about poetry events, programs, or other poetry related venues, I would love to hear about them.
